"The foundation sire of today's Bear Pen Plott."

Bear Pen Sam is the foundation sire and first generation of present-day Bear Pen hounds. He was a gift from Isaiah Kidd of Sinks Grove, West Virginia in the spring of 1961. Mr. Kidd was the oldest living Plott breeder at the time. Sam was five months old when he came to live at the Bear Pen Kennels and was the first hound to carry the Bear Pen name although he was not the first Plott Hound owned by the Fielder family. Fielder’s June has that distinction, being purchased by Homon Fielder and transferred into his name with UKC in 1954.

Bear Pen Sam was an extremely fast hound on track, having a tremendous nose and the ability to run a cold track that many hounds could not trail. He possessed the ability to wind a cold track at a great distance and move to the track, drifting it out and putting a tree on the end. He is credited with firmly establishing this trait in the Bear Pen dogs that exists to this day. Sam's running mate was Bear Pen Hoss. Bear Pen Sam preferred bear to coon and would often require “restarting” on the smaller game after each bear season.

Bear Pen Sam was very closely bred to the early hounds of Everett Weems, particularly to Nite CH Weems Plott Dan, the sire of Nite CH Weems' Plott Susie. Dan was out of Green’s Daisy Mae, a litter mate to Sam’s sire, Burnett’s Tom. Weems' Dan’s sire was straight Kidd bred as was Sam’s dam. In 1973, Mr. Weems secured the 12-year old Sam to breed some females. In exchange he gave to us a female puppy that became NPHA Hall of Fame member CH Bear Pen Fancy.

Bear Pen Sam was bred to a Texas-bred female owned by Rev. Frank Snyder of West Virginia named Snyder's Gypsy Brendy. This cross produced CH Bear Pen Rip, one of the fastest of the early Bear Pen hounds and the sire of Bear Pen Plott Blackie.
