Bear Pen Rowdy was a good, solid hound that was a pleasure to hunt. His hunting style was bit on the lazy side, not a hound to bust the back out of the dark for sure. But he was staight, had a decent nose, and was a good, solid tree dog that had a coon when he treed.

Rowdy was born during my first year of military service in December of 1969. My dad kept me posted on his progress while I was attending tech school in San Angelo, Texas and while I was in Misawa, Japan for three years. I came home in July of 1973 with a lot of pent up energy that I wanted to spend in the night hunts.

We took Rowdy to NPHA Plott Days in August of 1973 at Flora, Illinois. I placed Rowdy in the breed hunt on Thursday night, the first hunt I had him in. We treed 26 coons in three nights of hunting around Flora. Rowdy had never seen flat ground like that and hunted like an all-age bird dog. Back then we would hunt the UKC hunt and come in and have some breakfast and then hunt until daylight. Once I missed Rowdy and had to drive around two sections where I caught him crossing the road, heading on to a timber across a big bean field. When the third night of hunting was over on Saturday night, I loaded him in the truck and he just rolled over on his back and stuck all four feet in the air as if to say, "I give up, Boss. I can't hunt any more!"

I took Rowdy to Belmont County, Ohio with me when I transfered there with my job. I hunted him with CH Bear Pen Fancy and we hunted with Don and Dave Baker of Barton, OH. We treed 80 coons that winter. Don kept Rowdy for me and I thought he was a goner when he killed and ate Don's daughter's tame duck!

Dad sold Rowdy to Elmer Eisenbrown of Elwood City, Pennsylvania and Elmer kept him and hunted him until he died. Rowdy was a good hound, never trashy, a good tree dog, and a little more laid back than I like. I'll always remember him.
