Dog training threat brewing in WV
By Gary Knapp
1/24/2010  11:00:25 AM

I want to bring to every ones attention that there is a movement to stop year round dog training in West Virginia. Not just bear dog training but all year round dog training! I was at a meeting yesterday and was told in confidence that there were a lot of land owners, hikers, bikers, rock climbers and other hunters that want to do away with our training season. This is a battle that is coming and we must get ready for it.

The basis for this attack on dog training is not biologically based. It has become a social issue. The issue is that many people dislike hearing or seeing us training and hunting while they are trying to enjoy their own sports.

There are three things that we must do: First we must try our best not to have conflicts with other sportsmen and to try to show them the utmost respect and consideration. Secondly, by all possible means we must try to get along with all land owners by remembering that we are guests on their land. And finally, we must get more hunters to join the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association. Strength in numbers is our only defense for combating this all-out attack.

I can assure each of you this is a serious threat to the West Virginia houndsman’s training season. There’s no doubt it is coming and they are at work as I write this trying to shorten our training season. Each of us must take this seriously. I can assure you that I am taking this very seriously. There is a very strong coalition of groups formed against us and we can’t ignore this threat any longer. We just defeated West Virginia SB 210 which would have limited our present training season. That was not the end of the issue by any means. Our foes are regrouping as I write. Their next assault will come soon and just what form it will take is anyone’s guess at this point but I assure you the attack on us is coming.

Please contact your friends that dog hunt, even if they are not bear hunters. Encourage each of the hunting dog groups to get involved. If they don’t already have a group like the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association to defend their sport, urge them to form one. In the meantime, encourage them to join and support the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association. As most of you know, right now the bear hunters are the only ones who are successfully fighting to protect the rights of all West Virginia houndsmen and those from outside our state that enjoy hunting here. The West Virginia Bear Hunters Association cannot wage these battles alone! We must have all dog hunting groups involved. The more members we receive to the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association the better armed we will be and the stronger we will become. I can assure you if all these groups are formed against us; we are going to need all the help we can get.

If you would like to join the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association, please contact me. Not only will your dues help us to wage a successful defense of our dog hunting freedoms, your name on our membership lists will increase the clout we present to the legislature when combating the anti-dog hunting bills that are sure to come.
