Plott History

The histories contained herein do not necessarily represent the views of PlottDogs.com. There are many and varied histories written on this great breed of dog. Most are accurate to one degree or another. Some may be controversial while others will be widely accepted as fact. It is hoped that by providing as much history of the Plott dog as possible, its future will be secured for future generations.

Chestnuts and Plott Dogs
Introduction by Steve Fielder Octogenarians like Homon Fielder, now 87 years of age well remember the mighty chestnut trees that were the proud sentinels of the southern Appalachian forests at the turn of the century. No doubt, many bear tracks were started beneath their spreading umbrellas and many a mountain bruin was dispatched from their limbs as the baying pack waited below. Homon remembers many tales of hunting in the chestnut woods of his youth. I too remember the rambling fences of chestnut rails along the southern West Virgin....

A Plott Family Genealogy
The Plott Family Reprinted from The Annals of Haywood County, North Carolina by W. C. Allen, published in 1935. Most of the information in this story of the Plott family has been gotten from a genealogy compiled by Grace Plott, a daughter of the late Robert Henry Plott and a great, great granddaughter of Johannes Plott, the first one of the name to come to America. The story begins in Heidelburg, Batavia, Germany. During the great migration of German, Scotch-Irish, Moravians, and other people from Europe to America in the eighteenth....

The Plott Balsams - A talk with Von Plott
The Plott Balsams “A Talk with Von Plott” by Dick Seitz, Big Game Editor/Hunting Dog Magazine (Note: Hunting Dog was a periodical published for a limited period of time in the late 1970’s and perhaps into the early 1980’s.) There are some men whose name and involvement in their particular field transcends time. Such a man is Von Plott of Waynesville, N.C., whose knowledge....

Isaiah Kidd - Foundation Breeder
Plott people attending the annual NPHA Plott Days events recognize Isaiah Kidd as the namesake of the annual award for the high-scoring dog of the three-night event. But just who was this man for whom the award was named and why did he deserve that kind of recognition? (PHOTO: Isaiah Kidd, left, and his longtime friend Matt Radford, prepare a coon for supper at bear camp in Brandywine, West Virginia in December of 1964.) Isaiah Kidd was born December 11, 1882 in Beckley, West Virginia (my hometown). He was born the son of Lafayette and M....

Plott Hound History by Dale Brandenburger
During the past thirty-five years the Plott Hound has come out of obscurity, obscurity of the remote, wild, almost inaccessible solid wilderness of the Smoky Mountains, the same wilderness area which was home to the great Sequoya, Chief Junaluska, and the entire Cherokee Nation. Up until the true facts were known many thought that the white man had obtained the Plott Hound from the Cherokee. The truth of the matter this history will substantiate is that it was the other way around. During these years of popular gain the Plott Hound has come ....
