The Plott Family

Reprinted from The Annals of Haywood County, North Carolina by W. C. Allen, published in 1935.

Most of the information in this story of the Plott family has been gotten from a genealogy compiled by Grace Plott, a daughter of the late Robert Henry Plott and a great, great granddaughter of Johannes Plott, the first one of the name to come to America.

The story begins in Heidelburg, Batavia, Germany. During the great migration of German, Scotch-Irish, Moravians, and other people from Europe to America in the eighteenth century, Johannes Plott, a sixteen year old boy, and an older brother, whose name is not given in the records, embarked on a ship from Rotterdam, Holland, for Philadelphia. There were 209 German immigrants on board. The brother died on the trip over and was buried at sea.

Johannes landed at Philadelphia, September 12, 1750. From there he migrated to Newburn, North Carolina, where he found some German settlers. He later located permanently in Cabarrus County, where he married and reared a family of three sons, John, Henry, and Elias. The record of these three boys is quite clear. Our story will go somewhat into those of John and Elias; but Henry, who came to Haywood County, will have our chief attention. A brief summary, however, of the John and Elias branches will be given.

John Plott was born in Cabarrus County, March 19, 1768. So far as the record relates he grew up, lived, and died in that country. He married on March 6, 1799, Sara Gilliam, of the same county. Eleven children were reared. The record of five of them, Thomas, Rhu, John, Pheby, and Sara, is incomplete. Only their names are known. The other six have a family history that is clear.

Hiram Barnard Plott was born in Concord, North Carolina, July 25, 1816, and died at Elersby, Georgia, in 1870. He married Eliza Phillips, of Elersby, who was born in 1822, married in 1840, and died in 1862. Seven children were born, as follows: Georgia Ann, James Iverson, Marcus Wilder, Charlie Jackson, Sallie, Laura, and Barnard Franklin, all of whom lived in Georgia and Alabama with the exception of Marcus Wilder, who migrated to Kansas.

Allison H. Plott married Parabell Leet and reared three children, all of whom lived in Alabama, as follows: Lenna, Mary, and Lonnie. Jack Plott married into the Staugh family of Cabarrus County, North Carolina, and reared three children, as follows: Volen Marcus, a Confederate soldier killed at Gettysburg; Chalmer, also a Confederate soldier, and Martha, who married S.V. Krimminger, of Concord. Robert Gilliam Plott, born 1810, moved to Illinois, married there and reared a family. Henry Plott, a son of John and grandson of Johannes, remained in Cabarrus County, married and reared a family of eleven children.

Henry Plott, second son of Johannes Plott who came from Germany, was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, October 10, 1770. When about thirty years of age, he came with Jonathan Osborne, whose sister Lydia he had married, to Haywood County, or what was then Buncombe County and settled on Pigeon river near where Clanton is now situated. There Osborne and Plott seem to have bought a farm in partnership, made one crop, and dissolved the company, or partnership. Osborne went back to Cabarrus, but came again later, and Plott with his wife went farther west, took up a state grant on the waters of Richland and Dick’s Creek, the latter afterwards known as Plott’s creek, and settled down as a permanent home. The exact spot of his location is now the home place of John A. Plott, a great grandson. His death is recorded as November 1, 1839, and his wife’s as November 16, 1857.

Henry Plott became the owner of quite a large boundary of land, most of it in what is now Waynesville township and Pigeon township.

Jonathan Plott, the second son of Henry Plott, married Elizabeth Harmon, of Cabarrus County, and moved to the Pigeon Valley. His birth is recorded as January 8, 1805, his death as July 7, 1886.
